New Mexico Snowfall
I had been reading this blog http://wayfaringtraveler.blogspot.com/ the past few days and decided to paint the images that the writing evoked. I’m sure those who endured the loss of natural gas and water did not find their surroundings as picturesque as I have portrayed in this painting.

One of my favorite brushes in Painter is the Glow Brush in the FX category. It is great to add bright light sources, light beams, and sunrays. I used the brush to add finishing touches to Down On The Corner.

I’ve been aware of and dabbled with Artrage for a couple of years, although I probably haven’t given it the attention that it deserves. With the learning curve involved with Painter and Photoshop, it is easy to think of them as ‘real’ paint programs and less expensive (or free) software such as Artrage, Easy Paint Tool SAI, and MyPaint as not quite serious tools for digital painting. Expensive and complicated software doesn’t guarantee the best tool. Paint Tool SAI beats Painter hands-down for inking. SAI and MyPaint blend paint better than Painter. Artrage’s oil brush blended paint more naturally in version 2.5 than any version of Painter (and without all the brush controls and adjustment).
What was good about Artrage only got better in version 3 and the addition of a watercolor brush provides a tool to paint digital watercolor that actually looks like a watercolor. I always thought Painter’s watercolors were unnatural and ugly and too difficult to use. I’ve only encountered one artist who could paint natural looking watercolors with Painter and she spent years developing the ability.
Anyway…this week I am giving Artrage Studio Pro a try and so far, I am quite impressed.
